Dr Ian McCafferty is a diagnostic and interventional radiologist working in Birmingham.
In diagnostic radiology (DR) he undertakes imaging in Ultrasound, CT and MRI. He has specialist interest in gastrointestinal, vascular and urogenital radiology with research interests in non-invasive techniques to diagnose cancer early. These include CT Colonography (Virtual Colonography or CTC) & MR Enterography (MRE) for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer and multiparametric MRI of the prostate gland (mp-MRIP) to diagnose early prostate cancer.
In interventional radiology (IR) he specialises in a wide range of minimally invasive procedures and has specific interests in Vascular access (Hickman lines & Port insertions), Tumour ablation (RFA & Cryoablation), Urological intervention, Treatment & Diagnosis of Vascular Malformations, Paediatric intervention and Vascular Embolisation (treatment of fibroids and prostate enlargement).
Dr Ian McCafferty attended University College London & the Middlesex Hospital obtaining an intercalated degree in Immunology in 1986, and qualifying in Medicine in 1989. Following a period working in Australia, he returned to the south coast of England to a medical rotation in Bournemouth and Poole Hospital’s obtaining his membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). He undertook a 5yr-training program in radiology in the West Midlands Deanery scheme obtaining full Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1996. During this period he became interested in gastrointestinal, urological and interventional radiology.
After completing an interventional radiology fellowship at John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospital’s Oxford he returned to Birmingham to take up his consultant post at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (Centre for Defence Medicine) in 1999. In 2001 he was appointed honorary consultant interventional radiologist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital where he has introduced numerous new and novel techniques in the field of embolisation and cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Dr Ian McCafferty is co-founder of a number of national interest groups to promote education, services and improve patient outcomes. Interventional Oncology UK (IOUK) special interest group promotes minimally invasive cancer treatments. The Vascular Anomalies Special Interest Group (VASIG) promotes education, research and improved outcomes into rare vascular anomalies in adults and children.
Dr Ian McCafferty is past secretary, vice president and president of the British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR).
